Though sales of lithium-ion batteries remain low, facilities operators are increasingly interested in them for their high energy density, lack of gas emissions, and convenience factor. They can also be charged very quickly relative to lead acid batteries, creating savings in lower electricity costs. However, competition for the raw material for such batteries and safety concerns such as “thermal runaway” may hinder widespread adoption.
