North Dakota loses $1.4 million in natural gas fires daily

A third of the natural gas released every day from North Dakota’s oil wells, worth $1.4 million, is wasted through flaring, double what was lost in 2012. Companies including Statoil ASA and Whiting Petroleum Co. are attempting to stem the loss. “Everybody feels it’s a huge waste, to say nothing of the environmental impact,” says North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple.
