A rapid decline of oil prices has changed the economic environment for many companies inside and outside of Oil and Gas sector causing them to take a closer look at their profitability and productivity. Companies are forced to cut costs and look for ways to maximize operational performance. One way in which these companies are looking to overcome those challenges and improve performance is by making better use of the vast amounts of information which exists within their operations. There is also a focus on how to utilize this information without compromising the security.

Today, companies can take advantages of connected, IoT technologies in order to achieve the best results from their automation architectures. The role of the process automation controller (PAC) in an automation network has been extended beyond monitoring and control. It is now responsible for handling increased connectivity to a larger number of devices and the management of the large amounts of available information from those devices. In order to meet this increased responsibility, a more advanced PAC is required.

Schneider Electric is pleased to introduce the new generation of PACs, the Modicon M580 ePAC (Ethernet Programmable Automation Controller), that implements functions and services that support the needs for the O&G industry, such as extended temperature ranges, robust certifications, remote connectivity, various industrial protocols over Ethernet, high performance and redundant hot standby CPUs.

The Modicon M580 ePAC has Ethernet built in at its core with embedded CyberSecurity standards. The integration of Ethernet into the backplane of the ePAC allows the seamless flow of information from devices and equipment in the field, to the higher level systems and applications that need it. This ensures that the performance exceeds the demands placed on it.

CyberSecurity threats from external or internal sources are confronting all companies today. Deliberate or accidental breaches to system integrity have the potential to impact more than profits – they can put people at risk and even an entire planet. For that reason, the Modicon M580 ePAC was designed with CyberSecurity in mind, offering users Achilles Level 2 protection – the only ePAC with such protection.

As O&G and other industries seek to modernize and expand productivity through new connected technologies to achieve the best results from their automation architectures, the Modicon M580 delivers next level performance, securely.
